Fairy Doors

Hundreds of fairy doors have been attached to the bases of trees in Wayford Woods, Crewkerne.

It is claimed the doors have been installed by local people so children can “leave messages for the fairies”.

But trustee Steven Acreman said: “We’ve got little doors everywhere. We’re not anti-fairies but it’s in danger of getting out of control.”

But I love tiny doors! I even like the doors in Lakeside that are big enough for human to stoop through but (as far as I can tell) have no logical reason to not be human sized. If the fairy doors are damaging the trees or endangering wildlife then ok, but otherwise they’re ace!

Though reading more it sounds like they’re getting some shit ones. Hmm. Does there need to be quality control of fairy doors? Maybe. But what if that’s what the fairies like?

NB: Not to be confused with:

(I tried to find one that had the “Last Man on Earth” Scary Door episode but now there’s a new series called “The Last Man on Earth” that’s what all the search results are for :( )

The first casualty of chess is innocence

This was not normal chess.

Grading was simple. A: Your side wins and your piece lives. B: Your side wins and your piece dies. C: Your side loses and your piece lives D: Your side loses and your piece dies. F: You touch the main board, board cart, or otherwise interfere in the simulation. This was the ONLY way to fail the simulation.

Great post on reddit about a teacher who used chess to (unbeknownst to them) teach his students about war. Absolutely cracking.

Anthony Bourdain on Graphic Design

After combing through all 362 pages of Kitchen Confidential, I realized it was the best book on graphic design that I’ve ever read. Through every page, I realized that even though he was speaking to the rough and tumble kitchen crowd, he could also be speaking to the tight-jean-war-time-era-haircuts of the graphic design world.

More accurately Steve St Pierre on Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential as a Design Agency primer. Probably many other worlds too.

A tidbit:

Don’t steal. This is a given. From your peers or employers. From your peers, you can treat them as sources of inspiration. I spend a good chunk of time on Brand New, BP&O, Designspiration. I soak it in via osmosis and just let it settle, and those influences’ll slowly work their way out through my mouse finger. But don’t steal, you asshole. This community is tiny. We’re all working our asses off. And lord knows yours will be handed to you by the social media army if you decide to nip another’s piece. I speak from experience (from the good side, obviously).
