GRRM’s Favourite Character

(Tyrion is my favorite character. Okay?  OKAY?  Can we PLEASE put that one to rest??  I love all my viewpoint characters, Arya and Sansa and Bran, Jon Snow and Brienne, Arianne and Cersei and Jaime, Theon, even Victarion and the Damphair, ALL of them, but I love Tyrion the bestest.  Tyrion son of Tywin, the Imp, second son of Casterly Rock.  How many bloody times do I need to say it??  I swear, from now on, whenever anybody asks me, “who is you favorite character,” I am going to start naming characters from other people’s books.  Cugel the Clever.  Flashman.  Gatsby.  Hotspur.  Solomon Kane.  A different one each time… )

It is known.

Like, seriously, it’s incredibly well known. Ask him a different question.

Frankenstein

I do love a good book cover and this Frankenstein cover by Maciej Rataski does it for me. The double e in Shelley is a little lost but otherwise I’m a fan.

frankenstein

As part of the same series there are covers for Dracula or Dorian Gray, but Frankenstein is definitely the pick of the bunch.

Mitch Hedburg’s Best Joke Ever

As part of his Best Joke Ever series over at McSweeney’s Mark Peters talks Mitch Hedberg. Up until a year ago I’d never heard of Mitch Hedburg let alone heard one of his jokes but he is well worth looking up. I’ll let you read the article to see which joke Mark picks but here are a few of my favourites:

I’m against picketing, but I don’t know how to show it.

One time a guy handed me a picture and said “Here’s a picture of me when I was younger.” Every picture is of you when you were younger!

I wanted to buy a candle holder but the store didn’t have one, so I got a cake.

King Kirby

Today would’ve been Jack Kirby’s 97th birthday, we have Jack to thank for probably the majority of Marvel superheroes you’ve seen on the big screen (plus a hell of a lot you haven’t).

Captain America is Jack’s along with Joe Simon, and with Stan Lee he created Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Nick Fury, the Avengers, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, the Silver Surfer, Loki, Galactus, and (a considerably more verbose) Groot. That doesn’t even cover his characters that have appeared on screen, seriously, he helped create a lot of characters.

The (really quite beautiful) limited edition prints start at $24 (already sold out) and run up to an eye-watering $1800, but those of you on a budget can download scans of the plates directly from the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center and it won’t cost you a penny.
