Tim Burton Exhibition at the MOMA, New York

…the exhibition presents artwork generated during the conception and production of his films, and highlights a number of unrealized projects and never-before-seen pieces, as well as student art, his earliest non-professional films, and examples of his work as a storyteller and graphic artist for non-film projects

Iga Ueno Ninja Festival

The Iga Ueno Ninja Festival is the annual five-week ninja-themed festival in the Japanese city of Iga (in the former province of Iga), from April 1 to May 6. Almost 30,000 ninja fans travel to Iga (pop. 100,000) for ninja-inspired performances, competitions, and opportunities to practice ninja skills, organized to promote the city. During the festival, passengers on Iga train lines dressed in ninja costumes are given free rides.

Hells fucking yes.

Ode to Generali(s/z)ation

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

-Robert A. Heinlein

I reckon I’d do alright at most of those. Josh Kaufman’s list of 12 core human skills also sound sensible. It would be an interesting (if pointless) exercise to see (in a Sims-esque fashion) if you could only pick three of the twelve to be proficient in which you would pick? Would you go for three all related to communication or problem-solving or would you spread your wealth around a little? Which I guess is sort of going back to the point of the article, be awesome at one thing or very good at a few (even if this way removes any sort of time investment in order to develop the skills or indeed any uncertainty about whether you’ll be able to develop them to an adequate level).

I fear I may need to crack out KOTOR purely to sate the character creation craving this has brought on.

Albinism in Tanzania

Albinos in Tanzania are increasingly targeted by those who would kill them for their body organs, limbs and even hair to be used in luck potions by others seeking wealth and good fortune in business and professional circles. According to local residents, witch doctors use the organs and bones in concoctions to divine for diamonds in the soil, while fishermen have been known to weave albino hair into their nets hoping for a big catch on Lake Victoria. More than 50 albinos have been killed in Tanzania and neighboring Burundi in the past year…

One of three stories from the Big Picture today (along with an Israeli woman marrying in Syria who can now never to return to Israel and the Bajau, a seafaring nomadic people living in Malaysia), it’s quite harrowing and includes an image of human body parts. If you’d like to read more France 24 has an article from last year about the trade and the Wikipedia article on persecution of albinism has some more links.
