Undefeated

A calendar year rather than a season but either way a good year for Irish rugby. The Six Nations (and the Grand Slam), the scalp of the World & Tri-Nation Champions and the Churchill Cup.

In real terms that means we finished last season with only one loss (New Zealand) and as the top ranked Northern Hemisphere team. We’re currently just below France (by thousands of a point) so if the Kiwis win we move back up to be the top ranked Northern Hemisphere side, and depending what happens in Cardiff we could finish the day as high as third.

Now by my reckoning there’s just one more thing to win this year.

Avatar

This seemed a semi-logical follow-on post:

I know there’s been a lot of backlash about it looking like a computer game or cartoon but I’m not sure I mind – Phantom Menace sucked because it took an existing universe and CGIed it with disastrous consequences but this isn’t ruining any cherished childhood memories and there’d be no other way to achieve the desired spectacle other than CGI really (that said, I would love someone to make a stop-motion sci-fi monster flick nowadays).

HAL-5

Powered Exoskeleton sir? HAL stands for Hybrid Assisted Limb and is designed to help the disabled and elderly (the suit allows you to lift 5 times the weight you’d usually be able to) and also as an aid for disaster rescue. All cool so far but it’s with the military applications that things start to get scary.

I remember reading something about crash safety that said that the human body isn’t designed to hit something faster than we can run so a mechanical suit that can increase strength, speed and endurance is definitely starting to ring alarm bells. People are gonna get fucked up! What happens when things get to the point where you could get disabled in combat but just carry on?

Don’t get me wrong, power armour is awesome, but can you think of one fiction in which power armour occurs and the world(/galaxy/universe) is not just a bit fucked up? Perpetual War? Post Apocalyptic Wasteland? Staight-to-video sequels?

Also just for reference: The wireless network in James Cameron’s offices being called Skynet = cool. Naming your robotic exoskeleton company Cyberdyne = bad.

Kick-Ass

The official teaser for Kick-Ass has been out for a couple of weeks though I’ve only just got round to watching it. I’m still excited about it but this trailer looks nowhere near as cool as the mobile-filmed trailer from Comic-Con.
